《Derbent spreads its wings》
In autumn 2019, DA! Architects were part of the brave and poetic masterplan project in Derbent, Dagestan, Russia, led by IND architects Moscow office. We have been developing it for 3,5 months as a masterplan competition finalists. This was the challenge worth to accept and the ambition worth to pursue.
2019年秋天，由IND建筑事务所开始了德本特达吉斯坦城市规划竞赛项目，DA!建筑事务所很荣幸作为合作事务所全程参与了本次创新并富有诗意的项目，该项目一共进行了三个半月时间。这是一个值得接受挑战的项目。
As a project manager, Anna was extremely honored to coordinate people much wiser than her, much smarter than her and thankful for that special experience to IND Architects founder Amir Idiatulin who believed in all of us. It was an endless learning process of how to unite different specialists in synergy effect with one bold vision. We are proud of our great team SWA Group, ADEPT Architects, Praktika bureau, Russia Discovery and KnightFrank agencies and many others who had their priceless contribution to the work.

In our proposal, "Derbent spreads its wings". According to the project, the transformation of Derbent happens in two wings: 1) the “Garden city” northern oasis, with innovative agricultural park and fruit orchards and 2) the “City of Masters” southern district with light industry centre. The urban landscape network is connected by green streets, and its mudflow channels become ecological parks. The Samur-Derbent canal at the foot of the mountain serves as a linear park to save water for residents. Electric vehicles and urban electric trains connect all areas of the city. The encouraged walking and cycling environment offers healthy mobility of urban residents.

To create a landscape concept of Debent masterplan we’ve analyzed the current situation and potential threats such as mudflows from the mountains, illegal mining pits that can be dangerous for the citizens, together with biotypes’ disunity, isolation the town from the sea and the mountains, pollutions and negative microclimate. We suggest a sustainable ecosystem creation — planting natural barriers, creating reservoirs on the Samur-Derbent Canal against mudflows; restoration of territories and public functions introduction. The formation of green corridors ‘mountains-sea’, the activation of the flexible landscape of the embankment; the creation of a network of micro-parks and landscaped public spaces to stimulate social life; planting city nurseries, creating a common green carcass.
为了创建德本特总体规划的景观概念，我们分析了目前的情况和潜在的威胁，如来自山区的泥石流、可能对市民造成危险的非法采矿坑，以及生物类型的不统一、城镇与海洋和山区的隔离、污染和负性小气候。我们建议建立一个可持续的生态系统-种植自然屏障，在萨穆尔德本特运河上修建水库，防止泥石流；恢复土地和引入公共功能。形成“山海”绿色廊道，激活堤防柔性景观；创建微型公园网络和景观公共空间，刺激社会生活；种植城市苗圃，打造共同的绿色生态体。
The concept of embankment development and reconstructions is based on the resilience principle. We create new levels of embankments to protect areas from the sea level rise and extend the touristic season. The connection between the town, sea and mountains is activated; seashore becomes more economically active due to creation of some new working places. Local sandstone is used to construct new objects. Thus, environmental, mobile, functional and economical aspects were reflected in the proposal.
路堤开发和重建的概念基于弹性设计原理。我们创造了新的堤防水平，以保护地区免受海平面上升并延长旅游季节。城镇、海洋和山脉之间的联系被激活；由于一些新的工作场所的建立，海滨经济变得更加活跃。当地的砂岩被用来建造新的物体。因此，该提案反映了环境、智能、功能和经济方面的问题。
Getting married there, meeting humble and welcoming people of Derbent, putting all our best efforts in architecture proposals, we are now forever bounded with this charming southern city.
最后，我和我的老公在这座城市结婚，也遇到很多谦逊而热情的德本特人，我们尽最大努力设计了这个项目，我们的情感永远与这座迷人的俄罗斯最南部城市连接在一起。
To do a masterplan of such scale for the world’s heritage city, to do a great project you can be really proud of, is a very rare opportunity for young architects. This was the challenge worth to accept and the ambition worth to pursue.As a part of consortium led by IND architects (Moscow), in autumn 2019, we won the second prize of the OPEN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MASTER PLAN FOR THE DERBENT URBAN DISTRICT.
为世界遗产城市做一个如此规模的总体规划，做一个你可以真正引以为豪的伟大工程，对年轻建筑师来说是一个非常难得的机会。这是值得接受的挑战，也是值得追求的抱负。大！作为IND architects（莫斯科）牵头的联合体的一部分，我们在2019年秋季获得了为发展德本特市区总体规划而进行的公开国际竞争。

What does it take to build a city?
设计一座城市一共需要几步？
1. Build the vision.
Have to change your mind from architecture scale, to the urban scale. You need a stable hand: one stroke is not a line on the facade anymore, it contains so much: huge infrastructure networks, fresh wind corridors, animal migration patterns, mudflow streams and street life itself. It requires clear thinking: one wrong move may cause the disaster. A good strategy will bring the prosperity.
建立愿景。作为建筑师的你必须改变你的想法，把视野从建筑尺度转变到城市尺度。你需要一只稳健的手：一笔线条不再是建筑的细节，而是包含了很多东西：巨大的基础设施网络、清新的风廊、动物迁徙模式、泥石流和街道生活本身。这需要清晰的思考：一个错误的举动可能导致灾难。而一个好的战略会带来繁荣。
2. Know the city.
Sense the city culture, be curious, become a part of it. Why this city appeared on the narrow land between mountains and sea? Why all travellers stopped here on their Silk Road route? Why streets curved like a labyrinth? Why they carve from sandstone? Why everyone gathers in mosque? Why their marriage ceremonies are the greatest in Russia? Why they grow pomegranates? Nothing is simple. Notice details: check anything you can find from social media posts to expert advice. It is every day listening, listening, and listening. A city is not buildings. A city is a dialogue. To be sensitive like surgeon and imaginative like a magician: you are writing the city story.
了解城市。感受城市文化，带着好奇心融入其中。为什么这座城市出现在山海之间狭窄的土地上？为什么所有的旅行者都在丝绸之路途中停在这里？为什么街道像迷宫一样弯曲？他们为什么用砂岩雕刻？为什么每个人都聚集在清真寺里？为什么他们的婚礼是俄罗斯最盛大的？他们为什么种石榴？没有什么是简单的。注意细节：从社交媒体的帖子到专家的建议，你都可以查到。每天都需要聆听，聆听，聆听。城市不只是建筑物。城市是一种对话。建筑师要像外科医生一样敏感，像魔术师一样富有想象力：你在为城市写故事。
3. Build the team.
There will be many people joining the team, all of which will be incredible professionals, much wiser than you and much more experienced than you. Each of them will have their own ambitions. You will know a lot, you will know too much. Be the one who has comprehensive vision to follow, be the one who will inspire the most skeptical teammates, support the youngest members, find the balance of interests.
带团队。
会有很多人加入这个团队，所有人都将是不可思议的专业人士，他们比你聪明得多，比你经验丰富得多。他们每个人都有自己的视野。你会学到很多。做一个有全面视野的人，做一个能激励队友的人，支持最年轻的队员，做一个可以在工作中找到利益平衡点的人。
4. Be passionate.
It means always be the last person to leave the office, running and hoping that the station will not stop working till you get there. And getting up at 6 a.m. in the morning again to be the first one to open the office door and keep the marathon. Not because you have to – but because you want to.
充满激情。这意味着永远是最后一个离开办公室的人，跑来跑去，希望车站在你到达之前不会关门。早上6点起床，第一个打开办公室的门，继续马拉松式的工作热情。不是因为你被要求这样做-而是因为你发自内心的想要这样做。
5. Never give up.
