From the architect. Following an international design competitionJWA and NADAAA were appointed as architects to design the new Melbourne Schoolof Design building for the University of Melbourne. The University embraced theunusual creative relationship proposed between the two practices ascollaborative design partners across all aspects of the project. The projectintegrates the requirements of both the University’s Property and CampusServices and the Faculty.

The design process has involved regularbriefing meetings, workshops and presentations with various faculty usergroups, University Committees and Reference groups. The building designresponds to the planning principles set out in the 2008 University of MelbourneParkville Campus Master Plan.

The building design meets its briefed area andbudget targets, comprising of 6 levels (basement plus five levels) and incorporatestwo lecture theatres, workshop, library, two exhibition spaces, cafe, a seriesof studios over three levels, a studio hall, and a series of associatedacademic and professional workspaces captured within the briefed 15,772 m2GFA.

设计满足了空间简洁性、未超出的预算，大楼由6层构成（地下室加地上5层），合并了两个报告厅、研讨会、图书室、两个展览厅、咖啡厅、超过3层都占据了的一系列工作室、一个工作室大堂、一些紧密联系的学院和占据约15，772 m2 内建筑面积的专业工作间。

Central to the design is the Studio Hall, alarge flexible space that provides for informal occupation over all times ofthe day. The Studio Hall is enclosed to the west side by the former Bank of NewSouth Wales façade, and to the east side the Studio Hall overlooks the newcourtyard. It is spatially book ended at the east side by the heritage façadeof the Elisabeth Murdoch building.

工作室大堂是设计的核心——一个几乎一整天都要提供非正式占用的巨大流动性空间。工作室大堂就附在新南威尔士州银行外表面的西侧，而大堂东侧则能俯瞰新的天井庭院。空间最终也结束在东侧，与伊丽莎白默多克大楼遗留下来的表面对靠连接。

The Studio Hall is enclosed by a cofferedtimber roof that mediates natural daylight and assists natural ventilation. Thebuilding has been designed to incorporate a number of innovative structural andservices systems that combined with the building’s façade system contribute toachieving the targeted 6 star green star rated building.

工作室大堂连接着一个镶板装饰的木屋顶，它中和自然的光线并有利于自然通风。大楼设计包括一系列的创新结构，服务系统与建筑表面系统互相融合，以图达到6星绿色建筑设计的标准。
